Suggestion:
This happend to me. It'll take FOREVER to get them up to 1-3 hearts, but then after that, it was pretty fast. Like after the 3 heart mark, I would give a few gifts, and BAM a heart. But I also did the "rubbing" with the second wii remote. You should do this though before you give a gift to raise the affection points it gives to the gift. For more info on the "rubbing" check out:

Well coffee is one of his favorite items,however even by giving a favorite item it takes many gifts to raise heart levels.
