Chicken Run: The chickens want to fly the coup in this animated, family comedy. All hope seems lost until Rocky shows up and helps the chickens make a more elaborate and daring escape attempt.
The Devil’s Advocate: Kevin Lomax has never lost a case. He then gets an offer to move to New York, and work for John Milton, at his prestigious firm. Once there, things start to very strange. As time goes on he comes to realize that John Milton is none other than the Devil himself.
Doug’s First Movie: The megastar of Television’s Doug is characterized in this bland, formulaic tale, made exclusively for kids. Easy going preteen Doug attempts to spare an animal in need clash with his wish to take his lady friend to the school dance. This movie was built as a direct-to-video production. Voices of Thomas McHugh, Fred Newman, Chris Phillips, Constance Shulman, Doug Preis, and Alice Playten. (97 minutes, 1999)
For Queen and Country: This is a striking modern day thriller of Life in England. Washington is well cast as a prior paratrooper who battles for existence in an environment of racism, poverty, and corruption, and then loses his British citizenship due to a legal technicality. Cast includes Denzel Washington, Dorian Healey, Amanda Redman, Ocean Chapman, and Bruce Payne. (105 minutes, 1989)
Illuminata: Life, love, lust, and aspiration in a theatrical troupe in the beginning of the 2Oth century N.Y.C., although the feel is uniquely European. Playwright Turturro is in love with the corporation’s megastar/supervisor, and longs to have her act his latest play. Cast includes Jolm Turturro, Katherine Borowitz, Susan Sarandon, Christopher Walken, Rufus Sewell, Beverly D’Angelo, and Donal McCann. (111 minutes, 1999)
Flatliners: A group of five medical students start imagining experiencing life after death. One by one, under controlled conditions, they die, and then bring themselves back to life. No one is prepared for the side effects the experience causes them all.
Alaska: Adolescent venture on a grand scale, as a brother and sister take off looking for their dad and his downed plane. Structured like an old B movie melodrama, however implemented with conviction contrary to magnificent, snowy landscape and characterizing an irresistible polar bear who befriends the youngsters. Heston, whose child prompted the drama, plays a mean, cunning old man. Cast includes Thora Birch, Vincent Kartheiser, Dirk Benedict, Charlton Heston, Duncan Fraser, and Gordon Tootoosis. Act of the Heart: A religious based film that deals with religion and people who become obsessed with it. A young lady falls in love with a priest in the Catholic Church with obvious difficulties to follow. Stars include Genevieve Bujold, Donald Sutherland, Bill Mitchell, and Monique Leyrac. (1970 Canadian-drama directed by Paul Almond)
