From the Hip: Once more, Nelson plays a personality only a mommy might love: a barrister who’s made a name for himself by winning a miserable case through shocking courtroom strategies. Now he’s given a new challenge: guarding ‘Hurt’ who’s implicated of slaughter. Hurts elaborate behavior couldn’t spare this mongrel of a film. Cast includes Judd Nelson, Elizabeth Perkins, John Hurt, Darren McGavin, Ray Walston, Dan Monahan, Allan Arbus, and Edward Fall. (112 minutes, 1987)
Down in the Valley: Fascinating try to converge a classic Western motif into a modern-day tale set in Southern California’s San Fernando Valley, where a 30-something charmer rides into the life of an impressionable adolescent gal. Their romance goes awry as he exposes his real identity. Norton, recollecting a youthful Henry Fonda, is phenomenal, although author-controller Jacobson presents and then drops too numerous tale threads. Intriguing and vicious character research sounds like the bastard youngster of Taxi Driver and Desolate Are the Fearless. Cast includes Edward Norton, Evan Rachel Wood, David Morse, Rory Culkin, Bruce Dern, Geoffrey Lewis, Artel Kayaru, and Ty Burrell. (114 minutes, 2006)
Shadow-lands: Soaking up story of British author C. S. Lewis the Lion, The Sorcerer and the Closet whose content if firm life as an Oxford don in the 1950s is rattled by his meeting with a forthright American poet. Knowledgeable and moving, with Hopkins in summit form and Winger his match; the aiding performers are excellent. This was filmed on location at Oxford. Cast includes Richard Attenborough, Anthony Hopkins, Debra Winger, Edward Hardwick, Michael Denison, Joseph Mazzello, John Wood, Robert Fleming, and Peter Howell. (130 minutes, 1993)
For Singles Only: Absolutely not for those who like excellent films. 2 gals move into desperado’s condo where Berle is communal commando. The outcome is a rape, and then an effort at suicide, and few melodies. Cast includes John Saxon, Mary Ann Mobley, Milton Berle, Lana Wood, Mark Richman, Chris Noel, and The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. (91 minutes, 1968)
