Changes to the Warrior Abilities and Mechanics in World of Warcraft Cataclysm

Some of the changes to warriors’ class abilities and mechanics for World of Warcraft: Cataclysm were announced recently and I have summed up these details for you in the next lines:

All abilities which now use “on next swing” attack will change as the “on next swing” attack mechanic will be removed from the game when next expansion to World of Warcraft is out. This will also apply to the ability warriors now have called Heroic Strike. It will keep the name, but it will become instant attack and it will cost somewhere between 10 and 30 rage. The way Heroic Strike will work is that once you have gained 10 Rage you can use this ability and it will add additional damage for each point of Rage consumed above the base of 10.

The Fury talent Booming Voice will increase the Rage generated by shouts.

Other abilities such as Battle Shout, Commanding Shout, and possibly Demoralizing Shout will work more like the Death Knight’s Horn of Winter ability. These shouts will cost no resources, generate rage in addition to their current effects, and be on a short cooldown.

Mace and Poleaxe Specialization talents in the Arms tree are being removed altogether. Sword Specialization will stay but it will most likely change to a talent that applies to all types of weapons in the future.

Something interesting will happen to the Titan’s Grip too – seems like Blizzard is planning to give warriors a talent called Single-Minded Fury that is parallel to Titan’s Grip and will provide a large boost to the damage of a pair of one-handed weapons.

For multi targets damage the warriors will still be able to use their Whirlwind ability, however it will only do 50% weapon damage. To compensate this change, Whirlwind will now hit an unlimited number of targets.

Mortal Strike is very often used in PvP in World of Warcraft at the moment and Blizzard would like to keep it as one of the healing reducing mechanics. However, as the healing in Cataclysm will be changed a bit so it is more challenging for the healers, Mortal Strike and other abilities that reduce healing will have 20% healing reduction effect.

Sunder Armor will be reduced to three stacks instead of five while still providing 4% reduction in armor per stack.

Several talents that reduce the Rage cost of abilities will be changed to focus on increased damage for those abilities instead.

There will be a new Arms talent called Disarming Nature. This talent will make successful disarms cause the target to cower in fear for 5/10 seconds.

Mastery Passive Talent Tree Bonuses were also announced:
Arms tree will get Mastery level 1 give Melee Damage boost, Mastery level 2 – Armor Penetration and if the warrior spends a lot of talent points into the Arms tree they will get Bonus Swing which is similar to the Sword Specialization talent that is currently in the game, but Bonus Swing will work on all attacks and with all weapons. You have a chance to proc a free, instant weapon swing that hits for 50% damage.

Fury tree will get Mastery level 1 give Melee Damage boost, Mastery level 2 – Melee Haste and deepest in the Mastery bonuses will be Enrage Intensity: Every benefit of being enraged is increased. This includes doing more damage/healing/ from abilities such like Bloodrage, Death Wish, Enrage, Berserker Rage, and Enraged Regeneration.

Protection will get Mastery level 1 give Damage Reduction boost, Mastery level 2 – Vengeance and level 3 (deepest into the tree bonus) – Critical Block Chance. Critical Block Chance: Protection warriors have a chance that the block will be a critical block and block for 60% of a melee swing’s damage instead.
