Cheap Legos for Role Playing Gaming

My gaming group, the Dungeon Divas just started a new campaign with a new gaming system and new props – Legos. We had been playing Dungeons and Dragons for over 2 years and we finished the adventure. Like many gaming groups, there was a danger that we would dissipate after the adventure finished. Lucky for us, our friendship is strong and we agreed to keep playing and decide what to play next.

Our token guy in the group suggested the Serenity role playing game, which is based on the movie Serenity and the television show Firefly. We are all fans and agreed to try out a whole new gaming system, a new universe and a new prop system. If you are not familiar with the movie or the TV show, it is a sci-fi show that is basically a Western in space. Humans have colonized space and some planets are more civilized than others. In this universe you have guns, horses and lasers.

In a world that has old and new blended, it seemed like Legos would be the perfect props for our character pieces. In role playing games, the players have a representation of their character (usually called a mini) that they use on the battle mat to show where they are in the room, or on the street – whatever the setting. With Legos, we could have minis and have the makings of many cool objects, from wagon trains to space ships, from laser pistols to lassos.

There are several good Lego sets that can be used in gaming, whatever your setting. If you are playing straight up D&D then Castle Legos will be perfect for your adventure. Knights in shining armor, swords, shields and evil ogres abound in the Castle Lego set. If you are doing a modern RPG, you could use the Agents which is a James Bond sort of vibe with lots of cool gadgets and gear for the good guys and the bad. Combine Agents with City Legos and you have a modern Metropolis for your adventures! Legos Star Wars sets need no introduction, but they would be the obvious choice for any futuristic space game. Indiana Jones with its army Legos would be great for any World War Two settings.

For our Serenity game we have blended several of the sets together. That is one of the cool things about this game universe is the coming together of old and new technology. A character can be on the deck of a spaceship with a six-shooter strapped to her hip. I am looking forward to new adventures in this new universe. There are no limits, only our imagination!
