There are not many RPGs currently available for the Playstation 3 platform, which is why the Folklore was such a great find for me. Folklore is a RPG for PS3 that have been flying under the radar. you can purchase the game for under thirty dollars and it is worth the money.
While you await the next installment of Final Fantasy, Folklore is a great way to get your RPG fix. It focus around a daughter searching for her mother, and an investigative reporting looking for a story. It take place in a small Irish town, not the usual setting for a Japanese RPG.
The game play is a little different than expected, capturing your enemies and using their special powers to level up and attack. There are so many different enemies to capture and use to your advantage, each with special attack moves. There are also different outfits that make your strengths and weaknesses fluctuate. The developers also use the six-axis controller to their advantage, where you have to shake it to capture certain enemies. Its a neat concept that helps keep you in the game even after many, many battles.
The graphics are fluid and detailed, and look great on HDTV. You can see dust floating in the air and light coming through a window.
The game is split between two missions, using the two different characters. They basically travel the same areas, but they get to see it from a slightly different vantage point and you get different pieces of the puzzle using the two characters. I found that switching back and forth between them every mission or two gave me a good idea of what was happening, without missing out on what both characters were seeing. I guess that you could use one first and go all the way through and then use the other, but that way I think would make it confusing.
