The DVD is an impressive collaboration of animated work. The seven different stories were each produced by a separate Asian anime production studio, including notably the innovative Production I.G., responsible for the animated sequences in Quentin Tarantino’s “Kill Bill, Vol. 1.”
The segments are approximately 10 to 20 minutes in length and include:
“Origins” – a two-part episode summarizing most of the Halo mythology (100,000 years’ worth) through the eyes of AI character Cortana (voiced here by Shelley Calene-Black instead of Jen Taylor).
“The Duel” – an Arbiter named Fal commits heresy by refusing to follow the Covenant religion. A prophet dispatches an Elite to murder Fal’s wife and lure him into a trap. Follows a classic samurai structure and vividly illustrated in the style of a Japanese watercolor painting.
“Homecoming” – SPARTAN-II recruitment in 2517, and the Spartans’ acknowledgement of their history
“Odd One Out” – produced by Toei Animation (“Sailor Moon,” Yu-Gi-Oh!” to name just a few), the story is a playful parody taking place on a planet of children and dinosaurs. A member of Master Chief’s squad is stuck and must help the children battle a new covenant weapon called Pluton.
“Prototype” – a marine disobeys his mission to get rid of a new type of armor, instead using it to help a planet’s population evacuate.
“The Babysitter” – Orbital Drop Shock Troopers (aka “Helljumpers”) are on a mission to infiltrate the Covenant zone and assassinate a Prophet. Tension is created when a SPARTAN-II takes O’Brien’s place as sniper on the team.
“The Package” – another two-part piece, involves Master Chief and a Spartan-II supersoldier team on a dangerous assignment. Infiltrate a trapped Covenant fleet and retrieve a valuable United Nations Space Command (UNSC) “package.”
