Rich in Love: The individuals behind Driving Miss Daisy have taken Josephine Humphreys’ novel and tried difficult to knit another evocative Southern story but they don’t really triumph, although there are numerous fine scenes. Stamboul Quest: Exotic amalgamation of romance and intrigue with German agent Loy finding that he is in love with American scholar Brent in WWI Turkey. Herman Mankiewicz’s script is based on a real tale. Cast includes Myrna Loy, George Brent, Lionel Atwill, C. Hemy Gordon, and Mischa Auer. (88 minutes, 1934)
House of the Dead: This is a low-grade terror film, based on the video game, which charts the predictable destinies of some addle brained youngsters drawn to an island inhabited by zombies. Sloppily made and mindnumbingly inept. Cast includes Jonathan Cherry, Tyron Leitso, Clint Howard, Ona Grauer, Ellie Cornell, Can Sanderson, and Enuka Okuma. (92 minutes, 2003)
Double Wedding: Loy’s orchestration of her sis’s marriage ceremony is upset by the presence of free spirited bohemian Powell. The megastars are the entire show in this alternatively disheartening adaptation of Ferenc Molnar’s play Incredible Love. Cast includes William Powell, Myrna Loy, Florence Rice, John Beal, Jessie Ralph, Edgar Kennedy, Sidney Toler, and Mary Gordon. (87 minutes, 1937)
Reptilicus: The tail of a prehistoric beast, recently found, spawns into the whole animal. Only excellent for a few laughs as script hits every possible beast film stereotype, right to the very last shot. The picture was filmed in Denmark. Cast includes Carl Ottosen, Ann Smyrner, Mimi Heinrich, Asbjom Andersen, and Marla Behrens. (90 minutes, 1962)
Alice Sugary Alice: For profit spacecraft unwittingly takes on an extraterrestrial being that wreaks ruthless chaos on the team. Spaceage terror film reverts to 1950′s style, although unfolds at a determinate pace, populates the tale with fascinating, vibrant characters, and plants its good scenes with outstanding ability. Cast includes Tom Skerritt, Sigourney Weaver, John Hurt, Ian Holm, Harry Dean Stanton, Yaphet Kotto, and Veronica Cartwright. (117 minutes, 1979)
Mother: Sad youthful female who lives with her mom plans to carry out suicide. Her mommy invests the day trying to keep her from doing it. Well performed, prompted, and revised, although still just a stage drama. Cast includes Sissy Spacek and Anne Bancroft. (96 minutes, 1986)
8 1/2: (1963-Italian) 135 Fellini’s exclusive film casts Mastroianni as a filmmaker trying to create a new venture, among regular visions and numerous subplots. 8 ‘ is a long, perplexing, however captivating film that is full of artistic and technical wizardry. Absolutely one of the most extremely personal declarations ever made on celluloid.
