Can Someone Explain to Me What It Means to Have a Wii System in Standby Mode?
I mean, i know the basic answer…that it's similar to when a computer is on standby. But here's the thing. My system used to act irratic when I kept it on standby. It would sometimes turn on by itself when no one was even around it. So has anyone else had this problem? Anyway i keep it on off (red) when i don't use it but I'm wondering if anyone can give me more insight to what standby is supposed to be like for the Wii.
Answer:
Look. Listen. Bang. (sorry lyle impersonation from animal crossing)
The blue light is a slot illumination from having your Wii set up to have WiiConnect24 on. If you want the wii to go straight to the 'red' led, you can do so by turning WiiConnect24 off in the Wii settings. Also you can turn of the Slot Illumination too!
Doing so will cancel automatic updates to your wii (as in weather channel and news channel).

I'm just going to assume that when you say the Wii turns on by itself that you mean the Disc Slot light Glows blue.
If that's what you mean then that doesn't not mean the Wii is on, that just mean you have received a message from somebody.
When you're Wii is in Standby mode, your Wii is still connected to Wifi, enabling you to receive messages from your friends and Nintendo, which will be indicated by the glowing light on your Wii.
By having your Wii all the way shut down, you also closed your connection and therefore can not receive messages.
