Some wii games can use the gamecube controller and all gamecube games use gamecube controllers. Now, if it is a gamecube game you are playing then you must have a gamecube memory card to save on. If it is a wii game, then you will have to save it on the wii system memory. Now, if you go to data management you can put the data onto your sd card.

Depends. If it's a wii game it'll save to the wii memory. If it's a gamecube game it'll save only to a gamecube memory card.
You are not given a option and the controller has no bearing on the matter. Wii games go in wii, gamecube games go in gamecube cards.
