Soldering is where you take something called a solder iron – http://www.hvwtech.com/products/207/44220_PV.jpg – and some metal called solder – http://www.ladyada.net/images/tools/solderroll.jpg – and use the iron to fix an object on to another melting the solder, which then very quickly dries, like this – http://www.curiousinventor.com/images/how_to_solder/lift_off_solder.jpg – or this – http://microtorches.ayay.com/Soldering%20Iron%20solder.jpg – once you know ow to do it it's fine, but at first it can be dangerous. Mod chips need to be soldered in, and soft modding means you do another method that doesn't require soldering.

Ok you have been confused slightly.
Hard modding – is when a chip is placed inside the wii case connected to the system. This can either be soldered on or a solder free chip.
Soft modding – this is using a software hack which unlocks the wii's full potential.
